College Residency Feedback

When cast members at Corning Community College were asked about the title of their production, "Swallowing Fire, Etc.," they said it meant being bigger than you know yourself to be. Accepting something dangerous as part of you, and owning it fearlessly. Overcoming an obstacle in a different way. Swallowing your inhibitions and just going with your gut. Getting real with yourself and the audience. Taking in what inspires you and letting it burn. Doing the impossible with a big grin on your face.

They said improvisation is like…

…cooking the best meal ever from whatever's in the fridge.
…being stumped for words and communicating anyway.
…the pole in pole vaulting.
…a kaleidoscope because you can never make the same design twice but it's still beautiful.
…a chocolate-covered hotdog.
…taking the reins and letting them drop.
…nothing else I've ever experienced.

They said to perform improvisationally, you need…

…attention, trust, patience and curiosity.
…to let go of everything and be connected with yourself and the people around you.
…to let yourself be you.
…to think on your feet and have fun.
…to trust yourself or let go of the fact that you don't.
…to say "yes."

"As an artist, I have learned how to use my gut onstage and really access my emotions and the deepest part of my creative self. As an everyday person, I am more open to new possibilities in my life and in the people around me."

Students discuss what they've just learned

"I will be more fluid and less deliberate about taking action, ready to take action without thinking TOO much beforehand. I will be quicker to forgive myself and less of a perfectionist. I trust other people and myself more."
